Design Dilemma

I love beautiful window treatments. Specifically, I've been lusting after these for our living room:


Don't they look lovely?


So here's the hypothetical design dilemma: (hypothetical because there isn't really a budget for new curtains at the moment) How should they be hung? We have a small window seat that's about 12" deep. It's not quite deep enough to really be considered a window seat, but it's more than just a ledge.

Using the "high and wide" rule I'm thinking they should look something like this:

Whereas Mr. Fix-It thinks it will look "weird" and thinks this is the way to go:


It's kind of like the toilet paper debate. Over or under? Or, in this case, over or against?

  3. Why this post is the one to bring end my lurking I'll never know...that being said. I'm actually on team Mr. Fix It. I like the shorter curtains more. I feel like the curtains kind of stick out a little funny around the window ledge when they're full length.

  4. I think it depends on the nook size. If I am right that that 2nd pic is your living room, and it's as narrow as it looks, I like your way. You could easily pull those curtains shut and it wouldn't look weird. I think the short curtains works better for DEEP nooks.

  9. To really give an opinion I'd have to see your exact window and how deep the ledge is. If it ledge goes in but the top of the wall is even with the bottom then "to the floor". If the ledge comes out (like your example pic)then they need to be short.
    On another note--$500 for curtains!?! Maybe I'm just cheap but I would think you could make some no sew curtains in a similar fabric for much less than that!
