Birthday Gifts Shouldn't Be This Much Work

When I came home from work on Friday I found Mr. Fix-It unloading our built-in shelves. Ugh. I knew what that meant.

First, Mr. Fix-It had been anxious to properly finish the built-ins he had created in December 2009. There were a few exposed nail holes, spots that needed touching up, and the whole unit needed a fresh coat of paint. We had been talking about getting this project done since we finished the kitchen, but frankly I was hoping we could procrastinate a little longer.

Second, one of Mr. Fix-Its birthday presents was a TV mount. Previously the TV sat on the shelf - which was fine - but we couldn't easily access anything behind the TV. Whenever we needed something we'd pull on the TV which created scratches on the wood. No bueno. Plus, I think he was pretty excited about a magical, giant, hovering TV.

This stupid thing stole my weekend.

First the wires came out, and the TV got temporarily displaced.

Then Mr. Fix-It got to the part he was most excited about...

...the brackets were set to go.

After some massive heavy lifting and adjusting, we got the TV in place!

By this point it was easily midnight and time to call it quits. However, not entirely convinced that everything was beyond-a-shadow-of-a-doubt secure, Mr. Fix-It took some additional precautions.

Don't jump, buddy!

Luckily, when we woke in the morning I wasn't greeted by loud expletives when Mr. Fix-It went to check on it. With the TV having survived its first night on the mount, it was time for us to give it a proper home.

We un-mounted it (read: HEAVVVVVVY) and taped, sanded, and filled gaps. I say "we", but really I was running around, making a killer pork roast, and helping here and there.

The rest of the day was spent painting.

Sunday was entirely consumed by painting too - 3 coats, people - (minus a run to Home Depot for more paint and grocery shopping) but built-ins were entirely repainted, touched up, and after two years COMPLETE!

Of course, the first thing to be done once the paint was dry enough was get that TV mounted!

My new view from the sofa.
Can you see the TV floating inches above the shelf? Totally worth my weekend.

Guess there's only one thing left to do: reorganize the shelves! Oh, and Happy Belated Birthday, honey. It's like your gift just kept on giving. Allllllll weekend.
